Who We Are
Living Systems Design is a consulting and design firm specializing in environmental systems with a focus on integrated water management and hydrological restoration.
What Is Integrated Water Management?
Integrated Water Management combines the best of
- Rainwater capture, storage, filtration, redirection and use
- "Gray" Water Recycling
- Vegetative Structures, including roofs and walls
- Hardscape Design with permeable surfaces
- Landscape Design
- Soils Management
into a comprehensive, sustainable strategy for on-site water management. We specialize in helping our clients move toward zero hydrologic impact. We work to repair/restore your site’s hydrology to maximize economic and material self sufficiency while improving environmental function. (See Consultation and Design)
We provide site planning and design that incorporates:
- Systemic modeling
- Closed-loop structures
- Permaculture
- Low impact design (LID)
We can be contracted to consult at any stage of development, from initial site selection and assessment, to planning and design. We apply principles of systemic modeling, closed-loop structures, Permaculture and low impact design to guide us in all of our work.
Our design projects have included rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling systems, vegetative roofs and walls, rain gardens, permeable hard surfaces and landsculpting. We also provide education services; including seminars, workshops and speaking engagements. (See Education).
Philosophy
We believe that an environmentally sustainable approach to site design and management is key to the economic success of a development project. We provide a complete suite of consulting and design services to developers interested in achieving a sustainable, life-cycle profit opportunity for their project. With this in mind, we offer a site assessment that includes a study of hydrological patterns and a review of all aspects of the site. We provide planning and design for systems which repair site hydrology while maximizing site opportunities. We offer strategies for site development and water management which are often inextricably linked.
These strategies benefit the developer, property owner and environment, both economically and practically. Stormwater and greywater systems capture water for re-use and maximum benefit; overflow is naturally filtered through the landscape; treated potable water is conserved; water problems are solved, increased water self-sufficiency is achieved, and the environment is protected. We have provided innovative, low-impact and sustainable environmental planning and design since 1997. Located in the Seattle area, the company is headed by principal designer and owner, Michael Broili. (See About Us.)
